    http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/answer-sheet/post/what-the-us-cant-learn-from-finland-about-ed-reform/2012/04/16/gIQAGIvVMT_blog.html

Finland’s high-achieving public school system is now part of the conversation about U.S. education reform these days. What, it is often asked, can we learn from Finland? (Plenty, actually, though U.S. reformers consistently ignore the lessons .) The query  has been asked and answered so often that it seems like a good time to ask what the United States can’t lear ... Global standardized assessments such as the PISA and TIMMS tests are often used to benchmark and compare education systems. How do you feel about this? I found this useful video that explains what this PISA assessment is and what it measures: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1I9tuScLUA

I was asked few questions about Pushkin and Tolstoy by one charming lady from Jordan.

    Pushkin

Pushkin and Tolstoy. It is not easy to say whose literary works I prefer. They seem very  different to me. For me Pushkin is like a young genius man, and Tolstoy is an old man, a philosopher. When I was younger I preferred reading Pushkin and couldn't read Tolstoy's novels up to the end. About 1-2 years ago I reread his War and Peace, Sevastopol stories, Cossacks and admired his genius. May be I needed to get more life experience :). I am afraid that lots of cultural nuances get lost after translation and Tolstoy in Englis ... Read more »

Today at our English class we read the cards sent by the students from Jordan. We smelled the perfumes of the Jordan lavender. We even tried to read Puss in Boots in Arabic. All these wonderful presents were in the welcome pack from Khuzama and her students.

So we sent a lotto with the pictures of Russian symbols on one side and short notes on the opposite side, an 8 March postcard, our 'united' letter, a local newspaper, with our notes in English on it, and a reproduction of the paintings by Russian artists such as Surikov. The students write: ‘We are a small city, but the nearest METROPOLIS would be either Montreal (8 hours southwest) or Halifax (6 hours south).’ The area of the community is 1,630 km2 and the population  - 7,385. People come to visit the area for fishing, canoeing the Restigouche River, watching the Campbellton Tigers, Junior "A” hockey team play or skiing/snowboarding/climbing Sugarloaf Mountain. We continue getting Classroom Surveys from schools-partners of the iEARN project Learning Circles. Now it is from Wheeling, West Virginia.

Every school group will work over its own project and will do some tasks for other 11 schools in 7 countries. Then we will create one big report of our Computer Chonichles Middle School team out of  the reports  made by every school-participant. You may have a look at the report made by the students of Koltsovo school #21 (Biotechnological lyceum #21) in 2007. It was devoted to the similarities and differences of some schools of the world.

This week all groups are doing their Class surveys and we are too. It is not easy to write about everyday routine. What is clear to you could be difficult to understand for people of different cultural background. A very simple example with the boys' and girls' names. Not every person can identify which name is whose: Clay, Collin, Logan, Shelby, Shiann and Shieann. And why our so clear and evident names are so cool to hear as Kelly (our American partner) writes.  And to make and serve Arabic coffee is a real fairy tale. And ... lots and lots of and. The funny pictures I use are kindly offered by Khuzama, our generous facilitator.

First weeks of the Computer Chronicles project were really inspiring. The teachers exchanged hello messages, presented their cities and countries. We shared pictures and Power Point presentations about our contries, pointed to some cultural differences. In a word, we enjoyed communicating. The coming week is the week of making our Class Surveys. Class Surveys include a number of questions about schools, classes, favourite subjects, hobbies, sports, etc. Students get a chance to share their interests and some information about schools, and communities.
